A peanut is neither a pea or a nut.

Bananas are weirder than that. Domesticated varieties do not have seeds, which in wild varieties make the fruits inedible. They only reproduce by cutting shoots from the parent and planting them elsewhere, making each plant a clone of its parent.

Brazil nuts can not only trigger radiation sensors but can also be sexually transmitted. If you eat Brazil nuts and have sex with your partner who is highly allergic to nuts, you can trigger an allergic response.

Coffee beans aren’t beans, they are fruit pits. Because the coffee bean is the pit of a berry, it’s a f ruit.

A pineapple is a berry.

Another one. Strawberries, like raspberries, aren’t real berries. They’re accessory fruits, made up of the tissue that carries the ovaries. This results in strawberries being the only fruits that carry their seeds on the outside .

i saw that pineapples are berries the other day. I bought a pineapple and was thinking about trying to grow my own. all you have to do is cut the top off it and it will start growing roots in a glass of water. They get to be pretty big though and need warmth and sun, something that doesn’ t existing during a B oston winter.  They also take about 3 years to produce the fruit.

Ye’, there are rather climate dependant and three years is a bit long to wait too.

Are you familiar with civet coffee? If not, google. I don’t want to spoil the surprise.

Ye’, I believe Stephen Fry bought some (I believe from a Ca ribou or elephant , rather than a civet) as a wedding gift for Prince Charles. I mean, how likely is it that someone else got him some.

I don’t think I got anything like that as a wedding gift. I’m not sure if I should be jealous, happy, or sad.

Also, h umans are really strange sometimes: “Some animal ate this, but didn’t digest it... Lets eat/drink it and see if it’s any good!”

Stephen Fry is quite close to His Highness.

If you look at any food and think. It’s hard to think how any of it came about.

Take a chicken. Someone tried a chicken, then someone tried cooking it before eating it, then someone thought to pluck it before cooking it to eat.

I think since humans are omnivores it would be at least somewhat instinctual to try and eat a chicken or other animals, as well as many plants. I can only imagine that in the early days the tribe would hunt/gather stuff and bring it back and let caveman bubba try eating it and see if any of it make him keel over dead.

Cooking must have been a hell of an invention for early humans though. I also find it weird that we’re the only species that cooks food. Everything else just seems to get along with whatever they eat, especially carnivores - uncooked meat can make a human incredibly sick, deathly sick, but other animals seem to be just fine with it. I wonder when that evolutionary divergence happened?

I was thinking more of the weird things like the civet coffee. Along with learning to cook meat (which we now know gets rid of bacteria) , at some point we learned not to eat poop. And yet here we are...

Also, I’d like to close with this:

My ex thought it was weird when I told her I was making a fruit salad for dinner. She didn't understand because it contained tomatoes, olives and cucumbers.
